I made the AT-AT prototype using versa boards and other found materials, using traditional scaling and drafting techniques, basing measurements from scale models and video/image sources. This was before 3D printing became mainstream. The only 3D printed part was printed by an Objet, expensive at the time. :) I scaled it wrong so it never made it into the production version. Finished versions are made from fiberglass and resin. A bit of kitbashing was used for the smaller details.
I believe traditional, analog modeling still has its place in this digital era. In fact, it should be a requirement before going all digital.
Did I mention that I left my VFX job for a year to make this? ;) I just had to scratch the AT-AT itch.
